A female doctor is treating a badly bruised woman in the OPD. The lady who is half scared tells the doctor that she fell in the bathroom. Her husband is besides her. Doctor flies into a rage, collars the husband and takes him to task. Doctor is then pulled up for her conduct by the Dean who asks her to go on leave to sort herself out.

She takes a break and in the process takes us to six years ago where LANKA unfolds… Like her, we are trapped, with no escape route…

In flashback, we are treated to the three main characters that sport three permanent [plastered] looks throughout the length of the film. Manoj Bajpayee sports arrogance, Arjan Bajwa sports the look of indifference, while the female lead of Tia Bajpai makes sadness her USP.

Mix these three elements and you get what director Maqbool Khan calls LANKA.

LANKA is based somewhere in Uttar Pradesh, Bijnor to be precise. This is where Sisodiya (Bajpayee) rules the roost. His word is law even to the law. The name plate on his Scorpio is also his name! With such clout in the village you can imagine his arrogance. He has a ‘keep’ (Tia Bajpai) who we learn is a “zinda laash”. She is a doctor by day and helpless in the house at night. She can’t protest, she can’t fight back. She cannot even think of striking Sisodiya when he comes home drunk and is asleep, defenseless. A typical Indian female, hell-bent on absorbing the cruelty of her man and making her life miserable.

But somewhere, Sisodiya has a soft heart. This is shown in the display of his affection to his foster brother played by Bajwa. The story then is how Sisodiya wants a hold on his woman, calls the shots in his village and is fond of Bajwa. It does not move beyond this and the expressions get no scope to change.

Frankly, UP has been belted enough for crime stories and political vendettas to hold any more interest to the viewers. Unless it is packaged like the films of the 80s the way DABAANG did, UP and films on its system will continue to bore. Big time. So will the talented Bajpayee.

Towards the end, you are treated to flashes of Dilip Kumar. In a scene, somewhere similar to that of one in the 1985 hit MASHALL, Bajpayee cries in the same tone and tenor… “Koi Hai. Arre koi hai”!

The lady doctor picks up the revolver to finish off Sisodiya who begs to be killed.

That’s the end of LANKA. We are free to flee!
